Learn Shakuhachi

Want to learn shakuhachi
or expand your skills on this bamboo flute?
~
I teach shakuhachi online and in person at my home in Mornington (south of Melbourne). My lessons are in English, 日本語でも教えられます。
~
Would you like to be able to:
  • play by ear & develop skills in improvisation
  • learn Japanese pieces in Kinko or Tozan notation & gain an appreciation for Japanese aesthetics and culture
  • develop fluency in performing shakuhachi using Western staff notation
  • learn non-Japanese repertoire on shakuhachi
I believe a mix of all of the above makes for a well-rounded musician. I am especially keen to help shakuhachi players to develop good intonation and listening skills. If you wish to play in ensemble with other musicians – in any genre – you need to be able to match their pitch and intonation. Let’s get your ears working and your embouchure and breathing skills capable of great expression.

I have been a musician all my life and began my shakuhachi studies in 1986 in Japan. I studied Kinko with ‘Living National Treasure’ Yamaguchi Goro, as well as learning two other lineages of shakuhachi under Nakamura Shindo and Tajima Tadashi.
Since the mid 1990s I’ve made my living performing shakuhachi,  playing classical and contemporary Japanese music and works by non-Japanese composers in several countries.  I have collaborated with an enormous range of musicians from various genres and cultures and composed for shakuhachi. In recent years I’ve written solo works that involve a combination of voice and blowing. For more information read my bio.

Now that touring is impossible, I am increasing the number of students I teach, and am finding it most enjoyable to pass on my skills. Message me if you are interested in taking your musicianship to a new level on shakuhachi.
